Thumbi Vaa (Malayalam Cover) - "Gum Sum - Paa"

Song: Thumbi Vaa
Movie: Olangal (1982)-Malayalam
Music: Ilayaraja
Lyrics: ONV Kurup
Singer: S. Janaki
Raagam : Kaapi
Cover By: Rashmi Nair

Hi Friends,
It’s been a while since I posted a song here. I have not been very active on Muziboo for the last few weeks. I was down with a terrible cold, cough and everything that goes with it; ‘thanks’ to the Wisconsin winter.

Anyway, I thought I must post a song since its the first day of the New Year. This song is a very famous and melodious piece composed by the Maestro Ilayaraja. This tune was recently used by Ilayaraja in the movie "Paa".

This song was suggested by a few friends of mine, so I decided to cover it. I am covering a song sung by S. Janaki after a really long time. Hope you all like this rendition. Do let me know your comments.

In the original song, the ending has a cute bit where a child joins in to complete the rendition with laughter. I mimicked a child to include that bit. :-) Hope it doesn't sound too bad.

In a couple of days, I am leaving for India!!! I won’t be able to record songs there as my recording gear is here in Wisconsin. But, I will try and log in to Muziboo to listen to all of you :)

Hope you all have a wonderful and joyful New Year !!! I am looking forward to more & more beautiful songs from all of you as well as hoping to see many more talented artists.

Reshmi, “Happy New Year….!” :)

Thanks for posting your new song on the very first day of this New Year 2010 and Congrats as you sung it beautifully. We are expecting lot of songs from you this year. Okey?? :)

About Song: As mentioned in the above comment, I also like the ‘anupallavi’ and ‘ charanam’ very much..! (Starting was little bit dry). I don’t think that this is ::not your kind of song::. I really feel that you are versatile and all kind of songs will suite for your voice. You sung it really well. Keep it up

Correction: ‘Aakasha ponnalinilakale aayattil..” is the right wording.

Claps: For the final “chiri” (better to say “koottachiri”.. he he. Was it a New Year special?) :)

OFF TOPIC:

Recently Ilayaraja created a Hindi version of this song ‘thumbi vaa..’ in the latest film ‘Paa’.

“Gum Sum Gum Gum Sum Ho Kyun Tum
Gum Sum Gum Ghum Kyun Ho Tum
Aankhon Se Chhalake Hai Ghum Ghum, Honto Se Muskaan Gum
Ruthe Kyun Ruthe Ho Hardam, Keh Do Kya Bachche Ho Tum
Gum Sum Gum Gum Sum Ho Kyun Tum
Gum Sum Gum Ghum Kyun Ho Tum”

-Abhilash

Nice one, Rashmi. The karaoke wasn't great, and it felt like the chords in the pallavi were somewhat off and disturbing...

Hope you're having a great time in India!

I just came across ur blog.Just a question ...is the song gum sum gum from the hindi movie paa and exact replica in meaning and lyrics from the original malayalam score 'thumbi vaa'?

Rashmi Nair said...

@Neo - yes.. its a remake of the song "Thumbi Vaa". Ilayaraja is Paa's music Director as well. The meaning and lyrics are completely different though.

My close friends call me thumbi, nickname which was given by my little cousin (and stuck). It sounds nothing like my real name and I thought it was just a child's random made-up word until now. I need to know what it means! Can someone please tell me? Is it urdu?

BTW, is that really you singing? Sounds very professional.

@Thumbi - 'Thumbi' is such a wonderful name. It's a Malayalam word. It means Dragonfly. :D Sometimes, even a generic name for Butterfly.

Rashmi Nair said...

Oh and yes, that is me singing :)
